Update.

About every two weeks my life does a 360. So here is the latest update.

I'm still waiting to see if I can get into BYU-Idaho through letters of recommendation from professors. If I don't get in (which is probable) I'm going to take a break from school and run away to Europe.

No joke.

I'll be spending 3 months in Ireland, 6 months in the UK, and 3 months elsewhere.... probably Spain and France. WWOOFing it and traveling by bus, ferry, and bike.

And why not? I'm single, healthy, have no obligations, and absolutely nothing to lose.

It will all work out.

THAT roommate

Yesterday, I overheard one of my roommates talking to her friend about me....

"One of my roommates..."
"Which one?"
"The kind of weird one"
"Oh... THAT roommate."

And I realized I was THAT roommate. You know.... THAT one.

~THAT one who keeps a container of floating tofu in the fridge.
~THAT one who probably voted democrat.
~THAT one who will probably join the Peace Corps after she graduates
~THAT one who listens to all that ethnic music with unintelligible words and even more unintelligible instruments
~THAT one who thinks that the Word of Wisdom actually endorses vegetarianism
~THAT one who shops at DI, not because she can't afford otherwise, but because she thinks buying new clothing is wasteful
~THAT one who rolls sushi for Sunday dinner
~THAT one who prefers to get her groceries by bike
~THAT one who reads poetry, books on eastern religion, and dystopian fiction.
~THAT one who thinks reality TV is trash. In fact the TV would provide more entertainment if she got to throw it in the pool.

Yesterday I realized I was THAT roommate.

I laughed, wholeheartedly congratulated myself, and went back to reading about Tibetan Buddhism and sipping my peppermint tea.

My Axioms for Life

Things I repeat to myself over and over and over.... And translations of those things that only make sense in my head. :)

  1. Live in a relaxed, dynamic way
  2. Move with purpose
  3. Love people and ideas, not places and things
  4. Know god, and be able call him your friend
  5. Let people go (allow others their agency without changing the relationship)
  6. Be a giver, not a consumer
  7. Let the world swim (take risks and be committed to the decisions you make)
  8. Allow compassion to guide all relationships
  9. Above all things, value truth
  10. The world owes you nothing (be grateful and know the difference between needs and wants)

Bethany Learns to Conserve Water.

So....
If you didn't know, I am secretly an underground hippie/ indie kid/ liberal. Surprise!

But lately I've been thinking how I could be less of a consumer and more of a giver (both in a physical sense and in my relationships with people), so I've decided to start with water.

I'm embarrassed to admit that my usual shower takes between 25 and 35 minutes. But this week I have cut it down to under 10 minutes.

Now with laundry. Today I went to do my laundry and I realized the change machine was broken (again. Me and the change machine have been engaged in guerrilla warfare for some time now.), and I only had enough change for 2 washers. (I do my laundry every 2 weeks and usually use 4-5 washers). So, as I sorted through my clothes to determine which ones were absolutely necessary for this upcoming week, I was surprised by how many worn but not-really-dirty clothes were in my hamper.

So, from now on I will my non-dirty clothes back on hangers and in drawers instead of in my hamper and on my floor. And save $4.50 and lots of water and electricity.

And it only took me 21 years to figure out why my mom told me to hang up my church clothes instead of throwing them on my floor. Sometimes I wonder how I got into college....
